Our Story

Village Ski Hut has been part of Nelson’s ski community since 1968. Through generations of skiers, changing gear, and plenty of deep winters, we’ve remained proudly independent, locally owned, and rooted in the place we call home.

Our crew skis here, knows the mountains, and understands how much the right setup can shape a day on snow. Whether we’re fitting boots, tuning skis, or helping a family get ready for winter, we take the time to listen, share what we know, and make sure people leave feeling looked after.

Village Ski Hut is more than just a ski shop—it is a community, and we find a deep satisfaction in helping the same people we share laps with at Whitewater Ski Resort.

Built Around Skiing

Skiing is woven into life here. Whitewater is our home hill — a mountain known for deep snow, steep terrain, and an average of around 40 feet of snowfall each winter. It’s also the kind of place where you know the faces in the lift line, run into your customers on a powder day, and watch kids you fitted for their first skis grow into seriously talented skiers.

That connection has shaped Village Ski Hut for generations. Our crew skis here, our customers ski here, and many of the athletes we’ve supported over the years grew up skiing these same mountains. Through our Grassroots Sponsorship program, we’ve had the privilege of helping local racers, freeriders and emerging athletes chase some pretty big goals — from hometown competitions to competing on the world stage.

For us, supporting skiing has never just meant what happens inside the shop. It means showing up for the community that has supported us since 1968, sharing knowledge, backing local athletes, and doing our small part to keep ski culture in Nelson as strong as it has always been.

Our goal is to make skiing affordable and accessible to the members of our community, and as skiers ourselves, we understand the unique challenges that skiers face and find solutions that keep you and your family on the hill, and out of the shop.

Heather Renwick

Owner

Heather Renwick is a born-and-raised Nelsonite and began her career at Village Ski Hut as a teenager. She continued to foster her passion for snowsports at Selkirk College in the SROAM program, and after 15 years in the shop, she recently stepped in as the shop’s new owner. She’s a full-time mother to two boys, Owen and Mason, and spends her free time passing along the Sproul family’s passion for skiing to the next generation of Whitewater rippers.

Ian McAdams

Founder

Ian is the heart and soul of Village Ski Hut. He bought into the store back in 1978 and has been servicing the ski community of the Kootenays for more than 40 years. His reputation as Nelson’s go-to ski guy is well earned. He has passed the reins to his protege Heather Renwick, but you can still find Ian’s infectious smile around the store mentoring our staff, and keeping staff moral high with regular treat deliveries and vibe checks.
